I would venture to say that anyone that comes to this site has played a Dragon Age game, and if you haven’t, you probably should. I myself am an admitted serial non-finisher of video games. It’s very rare that I can manage the combination of time, patience and desire to ever “finish” a video game and the Dragon Age games are no exception. I have played them however and found them thoroughly enjoyable.
Volume 1 of this new Dragon Age comic from Dark Horse is written by David Gaider who was responsible for the majority of the story within the video games and will be released in print on August 7, 2012. Previously this was a digital only six part comic which finished up in May.
The story within Silent Grove revolves around Alistair who is undertaking a quest with the help of two unlikely companions: Isabela the pirate, and Varric the dwarven rogue. The three main characters have good chemistry and the art and dialog within the comic work well to pull the reader quickly into the world and get them hooked. I read the entire six chapters in one sitting and was left excited to see what happens next.
If this first book is any indication of what is to come, then Dragon Age fans should be in for a real treat going forward with this series. I would like to see some more actual magic being used as well as an elf or two worked into the story, but overall this is a good read. Any serious fan of the Dragon Age games will like this book and even if you don’t know too much about the world (like myself) it is still an engaging story.
The only downer to me was the very end of this book, which was originally the sixth digital comic. It felt very abrupt and honestly it wasn’t at all where I was hoping the story would go. The overall story arc was good enough however that I would be willing to read the next installment before making any final judgments.
Bottom Line: If you like Dragon Age and enjoy comics, this is for you.
